SOS Children's Village

Guwahati

Guwahati, Assam

Guwahati is the capital and the biggest city of the state of Assam, North India. The increase in the sectors of manufacturing and service in the town has been radical. While there is a large section of people for whom this has been a boon, a lot of people still continue to live in poverty. Assam is one of the poorest states of India. Besides being economically unstable, Guwahati is also unbalanced when it comes to equality between men and women. Gender issue has been one of the most deep rooted issues in the state. When clubbed together, the groups of people who are affected the most and face the repercussions of poverty and gender inequality are children and women, respectively.

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE GUWAHATI
SOS India marked its presence in Guwahati in the year 1988. It is one of the two locations in Assam that we work at. Our motive lies in helping children who are either forced to drop out of school to contribute to their family income or are abandoned by their families due to their inability to raise them.

Here, needs of such children are catered to with all respects; emotional and financial.
Many of these children were from the tribal belt of Chirang district, bordering the foothills of Bhutan- Assam, where the poverty level is very high. All possible efforts were made in order to help them adapt to the Village life. At present, the total number of children in the village is 161, who live under the loving care of 15 mothers, 11 mother trainees and three aunts.

Children at our SOS Village are enrolled at various reputed schools and colleges as per their Child Development Plans, where they are seen to be performing well in their academics. In 2016, the overall pass percentage of children went up to 97%. In addition, one of our girls also completed her MBA securing the 1st Position. SOS India also organizes a number of personality development and awareness programmes in all its villages, where children are educated about issues like gender equality, child abuse, importance of child’s rights etc.

While children at SOS India are taught about the importance of education, we also make sure that they are not deprived of their share of fun. At the SOS Village, all festivals of National and International importance are celebrated by children, their mothers and all the co-workers with great enthusiasm. Various sports activities are also organized at regular intervals in the Village in order to strengthen the bond within and between different families.

SOS YOUTH
Young boys have always been seen performing well in school and results of those appearing for their 10th and 12th Board Examinations have made the SOS Family prouder than ever with most of them bagging the 1st Division. Besides school, four of our youth have completed their Bachelor Degree courses, out of which, three of them got the 1st division and are currently under apprenticeship.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME (FSP)
At present, the total number of beneficiaries under our FSP in Guwahati is 549. A sum of 16 Self Help Groups were made in order to promote social support system. Once a family becomes self-sustainable, it phases out from the group and is replaced by another family. Children from these families are given educational support in the form of stationary, books, uniform etc. While children are well taken care of, adults under this scheme are also given livelihood support, wherein the aim is to improve the quality of their livelihood activities.

ACHIVEMENTS
