SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE Guwahati
SOS India marked its presence in Guwahati in the year 1988. It is one of the two locations in Assam that we work at. Our motive lies in helping children who are either forced to drop out of school to contribute to their family income or are abandoned by their families due to their inability to raise them.
Here, needs of such children are catered to with all respects; emotional and financial.
Many of these children were from the tribal belt of Chirang district, bordering the foothills of Bhutan- Assam, where the poverty level is very high. All possible efforts were made in order to help them adapt to the Village life. At present, the total number of children in the village is 161, who live under the loving care of 15 mothers, 11 mother trainees and three aunts.
Children at our SOS Village are enrolled at various reputed schools and colleges as per their Child Development Plans, where they are seen to be performing well in their academics. In 2016, the overall pass percentage of children went up to 97%. In addition, one of our girls also completed her MBA securing the 1st Position. SOS India also organizes a number of personality development and awareness programmes in all its villages, where children are educated about issues like gender equality, child abuse, importance of child’s rights etc.
While children at SOS India are taught about the importance of education, we also make sure that they are not deprived of their share of fun. At the SOS Village, all festivals of National and International importance are celebrated by children, their mothers and all the co-workers with great enthusiasm. Various sports activities are also organized at regular intervals in the Village in order to strengthen the bond within and between different families.
